Tata Harrier and Safari Receive 5-star Bharat-NCAP Rating

Tata Harrier and Tata Safari SUVs are the first ever cars to receive 5-star Bharat-NCAP (Bharat New Car Assessment Programme) ratings in crash tests.

The first-ever vehicle safety rating agency in India, Bharat-NCAP, conducted its first crash test on 15 December 2023.

Additionally, the Harrier and Safari also received a perfect five-star crash test rating by Global NCAP.

Before moving further let’s get a brief understanding of Bharat-NCAP.

What is Bharat-NCAP?

The Minister of Road Transport and Highways (MORTH) Nitin Gadkari launched a new safety rating system the Bharat New Car Assessment Programme (BNCAP) on 22 August 2023 which came into effect from 15 December 2023.

B-NCAP is India’s own crash test rating structure to ensure and enhance the safety of new vehicles in the country and help buyers make informed decisions while purchasing a new car.

According to the new system, star ratings will be given based on vehicle performance during crash tests, similar to the global NCAP and European NCAP.

Bharat NCAP is India’s autonomous Atmanirbhhar voice on Vehicle Safety, said Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari.

It is the benchmark of best-in-class global standards. Moreover, the Bharat-NCAP vehicle rating system has been launched to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations.

Testing Protocols under Bharat-NCAP

Under B-NCAP only the base model of a specific car variant will be tested and will undergo rigorous frontal and side-impact assessments, with the former being executed at a velocity of 64 mph.

After relentless evaluations in two key areas adult occupant protection (AOP) and child occupant protection (COP), The cars will receive ratings ranging from one to five stars

To determine the minimum score for star rating for adult and child occupant protection (COP), refer to the below table.
