What is BIS-CRS scheme?

Compulsory Registration Scheme-CRS is part of conformity assessment under scheme II of schedule-II of BIS regulation Act 2016. This scheme came into existence in 2012. CRS scheme is a self-declaration scheme and periodical audit of factory is NOT required for this certification scheme.

BIS-CRS is a mandatory certification requirement under BIS Scheme-II and a total of 77 products have been notified by 4 different Ministries i.e., MEITY, MCF, MNRE.

Who can apply for BIS certificate?

The manufacturing unit/factory of the notified products who want to sell or export their product to Indian market are liable to apply for an 8-digit Registration no. in BIS. The registration no. is unique for the combination of-

(A) Manufacturer name and Location
(B) Brand
(C) Product category

BIS certification allows manufacturers to use Standard Mark with unique 8-digit R-number on certified product until its validity date.

Switchover is a process of changing the old standard to new standard and Amendment is process to update existing standard to latest amendment.
This process is part of CRS but not conducted by BIS, MeitY is responsible for conducting smooth surveillance to curb sale of non-certified products in market.

What is validity of BIS-CRS certificate?

BIS certificate by default Granted for minimum 2 years. However, manufacturer can renew it after 2 years for next 2, 3, 4, 5 years as per their requirement.

Along with SDoC mark, the Manufacturer need to mark Indian standard, R number, BIS website reference, manufacturer can use coloured (as above colours combinations only) or black and white logo.

BIS is owned by Ministry of Consumer Affairs Food and Public Distribution whereas MeiTy itself is a Ministry.
Under BIS-CRS products are notified by three different ministries-

MEITY: is regulator for CRS scheme of BIS.
MNRE: is regulator for Solar products
MCF: is regulator for chemical products
Yes, provisions of e-labelling is there for the BIS product only if the product has integrated display. E-labelling is not mandatory.
