Scope	This standard specifies safety and performance requirements of a single or three-phase non-ducted split with single-stage, two-stage, multistage, fixed and variable-speed air conditioners and heat pumps (residential, commercial, and industrial) of rated capacity up to and including 18000 W their rated voltage up to and including 250 V a.c., 50 Hz for single-phase and up to and including 415 V a.c., 50 Hz for a three-phase power supply employing air-cooled condensers and test methods for the determination of various ratings. This standard is limited to systems utilizing a single refrigeration circuit, having one evaporator and one condenser.

Implementation date	The implementation date was initially June 1, 2020, but following an amendment, it has been revised to December 29, 2023.
End-use application	Split air conditioners, commonly used in homes and commercial spaces, provide efficient cooling for individual rooms or specific areas. They also play a vital role in cooling server rooms and data centres, ensuring optimal conditions for electronic equipment.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. The objective is to foster a safe and quality-centric environment nationwide. 

In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Room Air Conditioners- Specification: Split Air Conditioners”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), making it imperative for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will lead to the prohibition of importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.    

Certification plays a crucial role in ensuring that products meet specific quality and safety standards mandated by the government. Its implementation aims to safeguard consumers, promote standardization, uphold public health and safety, facilitate international trade, and stimulate economic development.
