Scope	This standard prescribes the minimum performance requirements of bullet-resistant jackets for protection against small arms and ammunition and provides procedures for their evaluation. The scope of the standard is limited to physical and ballistic evaluation of bullet-resistant jackets against in-service small arms ammunition used by the Indian armed forces, paramilitary, state police forces, and other law enforcement agencies.

End-use application	Bullet-resistant jackets, also called ballistic vests, absorb bullet impact to protect the torso. They come in various levels for different threats but aren’t invincible and can be bulky.

The Ministry of Textile, Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Bullet resistant jackets”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule-II), making it imperative for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will lead to the prohibition of importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.

Its implementation aims to safeguard consumers, promote standardization, uphold public health and safety, facilitate international trade, and stimulate economic development.
