The Customer
A leading global company that extracts and processes lithium for batteries in electric vehicles, energy storage systems, and consumer electronics.
Pain Points to be Addressed
Unable to obtain BIS-CRS certification for a higher capacity battery model used in medical equipment.
Key Challenges Faced
- Unclear guidelines on testing Rechargeable Lithium-Ion batteries with a capacity greater than 500Wh but a nominal voltage below 60Vdc for portable medical devices under the Indian Standard 16046-2.
- Testing labs and BIS officers had varying interpretations of the standard scope.
Team Vincular Rolled their Sleeves
- Conducted a detailed study of the Indian standard IS 16046-Part 2, Amendment 1, post which clarified with BIS that batteries for portable use, with capacities > 500Wh, should be certified if not being used in EESS (Electrical Energy Storage System) or UPS.
- Explained to BIS
- Consulted the customer to declare the use of batteries is only used for medical equipment to get BIS-CRS approval.
