Scope  This standard (Part 3) covers manufacture, requirements, tests and method of sampling for the following gypsum plaster units: a). Fibre-reinforced gypsum plaster units, and b). Glass reinforced gypsum (GRG) plaster units. The gypsum plaster units comprise boards and tiles. Boards are mainly used as lining material for ceilings, and dry surfacing material for walls, door panels or partitions. Tiles are mainly used as material for making false ceilings.

End-use application  Reinforced gypsum plasterboards are used in walls and ceilings for added strength and durability. Gypsum ceiling tiles are ideal for lightweight, sound-absorbing suspended ceilings. Both offer fire resistance and ease of installation in various constructions.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. The objective is to foster a safe and quality-centric environment nationwide.     

In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Gypsum Plaster Boards – Reinforced Gypsum Plaster Boards and Ceiling Tiles”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), making it mandatory for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will prohibit importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
