Scope  This standard covers the general requirements for steel wire ropes for haulage purposes in mines and elsewhere except for man-riding purposes. The following rope construction, types, rope grades, cores and range of sizes are included in this standard as identified by × mark.

Implementation date  The implementation date was initially May 21st, 2024, but following an amendment, it has been revised to July 3rd, 2024.   
End-use application  Steel wire ropes for haulage, essential in mining and industrial settings, offer exceptional strength, durability, and flexibility. Composed of high-strength steel strands in various configurations, they withstand heavy loads and harsh conditions. Corrosion-resistant coatings enhance longevity, while adherence to safety standards ensures reliability. Regular maintenance is crucial for optimal performance. These ropes are vital for safe and efficient hauling operations, supporting critical tasks in mining, construction, and material handling industries.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. The objective is to foster a safe and quality-centric environment nationwide.     

In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Steel Wire Rope for haulage”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), making it mandatory for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will lead to the prohibition of importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
