Scope	This standard specifies static watthour meters of accuracy class 0.2S, 0.5S and var-hour meters of accuracy class 0.2S, 0.5S and 1S for the measurement of alternating current electrical active and reactive energy of frequency in the range of 45 Hz to 55 Hz for single phase and three phase balanced and unbalanced loads. It applies to their type tests, routine tests and acceptance tests.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. The objective is to foster a safe and quality-centric environment nationwide.    

In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “AC static transformer operated watt-hour and VAR-hour meters, class 0.2S & 0.5S”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), making it mandatory for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will lead to the prohibition of importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
