Scope  This Indian standard deals with the safety of electric storage water heaters for household and similar purposes and is intended for heating water below boiling temperature, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for other appliances.

End-use application  Stationary storage-type electric water heaters are used for heating and storing water in residential and commercial settings. They provide a continuous supply of hot water for various applications such as bathing, cleaning, and cooking. These appliances are energy-efficient, easy to install, and come with temperature control features for user convenience.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. The objective is to foster a safe and quality-centric environment nationwide.     

In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Appliances for stationary storage type electric water heaters”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), making it compulsory for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will prohibit importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
