The Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change has introduced an amendment to the Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, for Marking and Labelling effective from their publication in the official gazette. These rules may be called the Battery Waste Management (Amendment) Rules, 2025.
To further streamline compliance with labelling requirements, the CPCB has introduced flexible options for displaying EPR numbers. EPR holders may choose from the following methods:
1. EPR holders can provide the necessary details through a barcode or QR code containing their EPR registration number on Extended Producer Responsibility registration number on either of the following:
- Battery or battery packs
- Equipment containing battery or battery pack.
- packaging of battery or battery pack.
- Packaging of the equipment having battery or battery pack.
- Bulk packaging of batteries or battery packs, not for retail sale.
2. Alternatively, producers can print the EPR registration number in the product information brochure.
Transparency boost: The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) will publish and update a quarterly list of compliant producers on its portal.
Packaging Rules: This shall not apply to packaging covered under rule 26 of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011.
Exemptions on Certain Marking Rules for Hazardous Metals
- No need to mark ‘Cd’ (Cadmium) if concentration ≤ 0.002% (20 ppm)
- No need to mark ‘Pb’ (Lead) if the concentration ≤ 0.004% (40 ppm).
