Scope   This standard (Part 1) covers the requirements of cold-drawn unalloyed steel wires of circular cross-section for the manufacture of mechanical springs for static duty and dynamic duty applications. Patenting, prior to drawing, may be carried out as and when required.

End-use application  Cold-drawn unalloyed steel wire for mechanical springs is used in manufacturing compression, tension, and torsion springs for automotive, industrial machinery, and household applications. Its excellent tensile strength and elasticity ensure reliable performance under dynamic loads.

The Ministry of Steel, Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Steel wire for mechanical springs Part-1 cold drawn unalloyed steel wire” This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), requiring manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will prohibit importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
