Scope	This standard (Part 1) deals with welded low-carbon steel cylinders intended for storage and transportation of liquefied petroleum gases of a nominal capacity exceeding 5L up to and including 250water capacity. This standard lays down the minimum requirements for the materials, design, manufacture, construction, tests and marking on these cylinders.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. The objective is to foster a safe and quality-centric environment nationwide.    

In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Welded low carbon steel gas cylinder exceeding 5-litre water capacity for low-pressure liquefiable gases Part1 Cylinders for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), requiring manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will prohibit importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
