From April 2025 - Government Makes ISI Mark Mandatory for Aluminium & Aluminium Alloy Products

Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products Must Carry ISI Mark

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has issued the Aluminium and Aluminium Alloy Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, which will come into effect on 1st April 2025.

As per this notification, goods or articles listed in the below table must comply with the corresponding Indian Standards and bear the Standard Mark under a license issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) by Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.

Exemptions

  • Export Products: The provisions of this order shall not apply to goods or articles manufactured domestically for export.
  • R&D Imports: Goods or articles imported for research and development purposes, up to 200 kilograms annually, are exempted under the following conditions:
    • These items must not be sold commercially and must be disposed of as scrap.
    • Manufacturers must maintain year-wise records of such imports and submit the details to the Central Government on official letterhead, duly signed by an authorized signatory.

Enforcement Authority

The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) shall act as the certifying and enforcement authority for all goods and articles specified in the table.

Penalties

Any individual or entity found violating the provisions of this order will be subject to penalties as prescribed under the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.

Implementation Timeline

The order will be implemented in a phased manner as follows:

  • General Enterprises: 1st April, 2025
  • Small Enterprises: 1st July, 2025
  • Micro Enterprises: 1st October, 2025

This initiative aims to ensure the quality and safety of aluminium and aluminium alloy products while supporting innovation and adhering to international standards.
