Product | Mechanically Woven,- Twisted, Hexagonal Wire Mesh Gabions, Revet Mattresses and Rock Fall Netting and Other Rock Fall Netting and Other Products for Civil Engineering Purposes (Galvanized Steel Wire or Galvanized Steel Wire with polymer coating) |
Certification Body | Bureau of Indian Standards |
Indian Standard | IS 16014:2018 |
Scope | This standard covers gabions, revet mattresses, sack gabions, soil reinforcement facia units and rock fall netting produced from double-twisted galvanized wire mesh, and galvanized wire for lacing wire, used for manufacturing, assembling, and installation of the product. This standard also covers gabions, revet mattresses, sack gabions, soil reinforcement facia units and rock fall netting in which the wire mesh and lacing wire are polymer-coated after the galvanizing. Double twisted wire mesh for gabions, rivet mattresses, sack gabions, soil reinforcement facia units and rock fall netting is produced in different classes based on the type of coating. |
Voluntary/Mandatory | Mandatory |
Implementation date | The implementation date was initially May 21st, 2024, but it has been revised to July 3rd, 2024 following an amendment. |
End-use application | Mechanically woven, double-twisted hexagonal wire mesh products like gabions, revet mattresses, and rock fall netting are vital in civil engineering for their robustness and versatility. Made from galvanized steel wire or polymer-coated variants, they offer durability and corrosion resistance, crucial for outdoor applications. These products serve multiple purposes including erosion control, slope stabilization, and protection against rock falls in infrastructure projects. Their hexagonal structure facilitates easy installation around irregular shapes and contours, making them adaptable to diverse environmental and construction challenges. |

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. The objective is to foster a safe and quality-centric environment nationwide.
In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Mechanically Woven, Double-twisted, Hexagonal Wire Mesh Gabions, Revet Mattresses and Rock Fall Netting and Other Rock Fall Netting and Other Products for Civil Engineering Purposes (Galvanized Steel Wire or Galvanized Steel Wire with polymer coating)”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), making it mandatory for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will lead to the prohibition of importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
Certification plays a crucial role in ensuring that products meet specific quality and safety standards mandated by the government. Its implementation aims to safeguard consumers, promote standardization, uphold public health and safety, facilitate international trade, and stimulate economic development.
To achieve BIS certification, products must fully comply with all parameters outlined in the corresponding Indian Standard. This ensures that products meet stringent quality and safety requirements, bolstering consumer confidence and advancing industry standards.
