Scope  This standard covers general and performance requirements for geotextiles used to prevent mixing of a sub-grade soil and an aggregate cover material (subbase, base, select embankment, etc.) in pavement structures. This specification is also applicable to situations other than beneath pavements where separation of two dissimilar materials is required but where water seepage through the geotextile is not a critical function.

End-use application  Geotextiles in sub-grade separation for pavement structures prevent soil layer intermixing, enhance load distribution, and improve drainage. These functions increase pavement stability and longevity while reducing maintenance costs.

The Ministry of Textile, Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulateGeotextiles used in sub-grade separation in pavement structures”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule-II), making it imperative for manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will lead to the prohibition of importing, manufacturing, or selling these goods in the Indian market.
