New Clarification for Global Steel Imports into India
The Ministry of Steel has issued a clarificatory order on the Quality Control Order (QCO) that directly affects all steel products covered under mandatory BIS certification. If you’re importing steel products into India, it’s not enough that only the finished products meet BIS standards. Now, the intermediate materials used like:
-
Steel cast billet ingots
-
Billets
-
Blooms
-
Slabs
must also comply with BIS standards, just like domestic manufacturers already do.
When does this apply?
-
Effective date: For all imports with a bill of lading dated on or after 16 June 2025.
-
This isn’t a new rule; it’s a clarification to ensure fair and consistent application of existing BIS compliance.
Why this step matters:
-
Better control over steel product quality in the Indian market
-
Protection against substandard and cheap imports
-
Ensures traceability and BIS compliance from raw materials to final products
Action required for industry:
All foreign manufacturers exporting steel and related products into India must:
-
Confirm that their intermediate steel materials are BIS certified.
-
Understand that this is a mandatory requirement under India’s BIS certification protocols.
-
Work closely with suppliers to trace and document compliance before shipment.
This clarification strengthens India’s commitment to high product standards and creates a level playing field for domestic and foreign manufacturers alike. Acting early helps ensure smooth customs clearance and protects your brand’s reputation in the Indian market.
