India Rolls Out IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 for AV & ICT Safety
To achieve uniformity with the world safety standard, the Bureau of Indian Standards, following comprehensive internal and stakeholder consultations, has finally rolled out the standard IS/IEC 62368-1:2023, applicable for Audio/Video (AV) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Equipment.
Important pointers:
- The Indian Standard IS/IEC 62368-1:2023 is technically equivalent to the international standard IEC 62368-1:2018, Edition 3.0.
- The standard replaces IS 13252 1/IS 616, previously applicable under the BIS Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS). This unified standard combines the safety requirements for AV and ICT equipment under a single, globally harmonised framework.
- The transition is expected to enhance safety compliance and facilitate global market access for Indian manufacturers.
Impact on BIS-CRS Applicants:
At present, BIS has yet to release the official notification regarding:
- The implementation date
- Whether already registered products will require transition
- Guidelines for new product registrations under the updated standard and more
