Govt. Introduced Amendments to E-Waste Management Rules 2022

Recently, the Central Government introduced amendments to The E-waste (Management) Rules, 2022, focusing on enhancing e-waste management practices.

Here are the key highlights:

New Definition: A new definition for “dismantler” has been introduced, any person or entity engaged in dismantling used electrical and electronic equipment and components, following rules set by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB).

Extended Filing Time: Manufacturers, producers, refurbishes, and recyclers of electrical and electronic equipment now have the flexibility to request an extension of up to nine months for filing annual returns, if deemed necessary for public interest or effective implementation.

EPR Certificate Exchange Platforms: The Central Government has the authority to set up one or more platforms to exchange or transfer EPR (Extended Product Responsibility) certificates. These platforms operate in line with guidelines provided by the CPCB, subject to approval by the Central Government.

Regulation of Dismantling: Measures have been introduced for the fixation of EPR rates, aiming to regulate the dismantling of used electronic equipment.

Price Regulation: The exchange price for these certificates between registered entities must fall within the range set by the CPCB.

These amendments are introduced to strengthen e-waste management practices, fostering smoother operations, and ensuring effective regulation of environmental responsibilities.
