DoT Reinforces SAR Compliance Standards for Mobile Handsets
On May 7, 2025, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) reaffirmed its commitment to consumer safety by issuing a fresh notification on Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) standards for mobile handsets. This reinforces the requirement that all mobile devices sold in India must comply with the SAR limit of 1.6 W/kg (averaged over 1 gram of tissue).
Additionally, the DoT has mandated that all previously issued Office Memoranda (OMs) related to SAR compliance must continue to be followed by mobile handset manufacturers.
Why This Matters:
This initiative enhances transparency and consumer empowerment, ensuring that end users have access to vital safety information about their devices. It also reinforces the mobile industry’s responsibility to maintain high safety standards.
Key SAR Compliance Guidelines:
-
Mandatory SAR Limit: Devices must not exceed 1.6 W/kg.
-
Clear SAR Labelling: SAR values must be visibly printed on handset packaging.
-
In-Box Safety Booklet: A safety leaflet with SAR values and user precautions is required.
-
Digital Access: SAR details should be easily accessible via QR codes, e-labels, or website links.
-
Online Transparency: The SAR value must also be available on the brand’s website and within device settings.
