On January 1, 2024, the Department of Consumer Affairs, made it mandatory for all packaged goods to display their “date of manufacture” and “unit price”.
Before this announcement, companies had the choice to print either the manufacturing date, import date, or packaging date. But now, companies have been mandated to print only the ‘date of manufacturing’ along with the ‘unit sale price’, as per the latest notification issued by the ministry.
Meanwhile, the unit sale price facilitates understanding the cost per unit, be it per kilogram, gram, or other quantities, making comparisons easier and enhancing transparency in pricing.
For instance, a 2.5 kg wheat flour pack will display the unit sale price per kilogram alongside the maximum retail price (MRP). Similarly, products below one kilogram will show the sale price per gram and the total MRP.
This change aims to empower consumers by providing crucial information. Knowing the manufacturing date helps consumers gauge the product’s age, aiding them in making informed purchases.
