The Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) has issued crucial guidelines regarding Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) for plastic packaging. Here are the key points you need to know:
As per the guidelines producers, importers and brand owners (PIBOs) and plastic waste processors (PWPs) are required to register on the EPR portal developed by CPCB to fulfil their EPR responsibilities.
PIBOs operating in more than two states need to register with CPCB, while those operating in one or two states should register with their respective State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) / Pollution Control Committee (PCC). PWPs must register with the concerned SPCBs/PCCs.
So far, 36,230 PIBOs and 2351 PWPs have been registered. However, there are still many operating without proper registration, violating the PWM rules.
Action Required:
All PIBOs & PWPs are urged to register by March 31, 2024, by submitting a complete application on the EPR Portal.
Consequence for non-compliance:
Non-compliance may result in legal action, including fines and closure of operations, under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
