Today’s focus is on IS/IEC 60947: Part 5: Section 1: 2016, a key standard that will soon fall under mandatory BIS Scheme X certification.

This standard applies to low-voltage switchgear and controlgear, specifically control circuit devices and switching elements that are critical for automation and electrical safety.

It covers a wide range of electromechanical control devices, including:

  • Manual control switches (e.g., push-buttons, rotary switches)
  • Foot switches – electromagnetically operated
  • Contactors relays – time delayed or instantaneous
  • Pilot switches (e.g., pressure switches)
  • Temperature-sensitive switches, thermostats, and programmers
  • Position switches and associated devices like indicator lights

These components are integral to industrial control systems, machinery, and panels. Ensuring their compliance is vital not just for regulatory approval, but also for performance assurance and operational safety.

The compliance deadline is 10th November 2025, and businesses involved in the manufacturing or importing of such products must begin the certification process now to stay ahead of regulatory requirements.

If your business operates in the Indian market and deals with circuit control devices or switching elements, Scheme X certification is non-negotiable.
