BIS Certification Must for Metal Cutting Tools Under OTR
India’s manufacturing ecosystem is moving towards stronger compliance, and metal cutting machine tools are next in line under the Bureau of Indian Standards Scheme X – Omnibus Technical Regulation (OTR).
From September 1, 2026, BIS certification will be mandatory for all metal cutting machine tools, including their assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components.
Scope of Regulation:
The order covers a broad range of machines, including:
- Laser cutting machines
- Ultrasonic cutting machines
- Electro-discharge machines
- Machining centres
- Lathes (turning centres)
- Drilling machines
- Milling machines
- Grinding machines
- Gear cutting machines
- Broaching machines
Applicable HSN Codes:
- 8456
- 8457
- 8458
- 8459
- 8460
- 8461
- 846693
Important Note:
This regulation does not apply to machinery or electrical equipment already regulated under any other BIS Quality Control Order (QCO).
Why does it matter?
Certification ensures product safety, performance reliability, and smooth market access. Given the time-intensive nature of testing, documentation, and approvals, early preparation is the smartest move for manufacturers and importers.
