Under the BIS Scheme X – Omnibus Technical Regulation (OTR), another key category comes into focus: Diesel Generators. These power solutions, widely used across various industries, will soon be subject to mandatory BIS certification requirements.

Scope of Regulation:

This regulation applies to all types of diesel generators and their assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components, including:

  • Portable and standby generators
  • Industrial and silent generators
  • Marine and trailer-mounted generators

It also covers key components such as engines, alternators, control panels, fuel tanks, and cooling systems.

Applicable HSN Codes:

  • 8502
  • 8503

Compliance Deadline:

1st September 2026 – Post this date, only BIS-certified diesel generators and components will be allowed to be manufactured, imported, or sold in the Indian market.

Important Note:

This order does not apply to any machinery or electrical equipment already regulated under another BIS Quality Control Order (QCO).

The inclusion of diesel generators under OTR reflects India’s focus on ensuring quality, safety, and reliability in critical backup power systems. If you’re a manufacturer or importer in this category, start the certification process now to avoid last-minute hurdles.
