BIS Certification for Switchgear Above 1000V Under OTR
As India continues to strengthen its regulatory framework for electrical and electronic equipment, the spotlight today is on a crucial category: High-voltage Switchgear and Control Gear Equipment (above 1000V)—now officially brought under the ambit of Bureau of Indian Standards Scheme X – Omnibus Technical Regulation (OTR).
These high-voltage systems are the backbone of power transmission and industrial infrastructure, responsible for managing, protecting, and controlling the flow of electricity in critical applications..
Scope of Regulation:
Covers all types of switchgear and control gear equipment operating above 1000V, including their assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components.
Examples Include:
- Vacuum Circuit Breakers (VCBs)
- Gas-Insulated Switchgear (GIS)
- Air-Insulated Switchgear (AIS)
- SF₆ Circuit Breakers
- Oil Circuit Breakers (OCBs)
- Disconnectors (HV/MV Isolators)
- Load Break Switches (LBS)
- Ring Main Units (RMUs)
- Lightning Arresters – HV/MV
- Instrument Transformers (CTs & PTs)
Applicable HSN Codes:
- 8535
- 8537
- 8538
Compliance Deadline:
1st September 2026: Post this date, manufacturing, importing, or selling non-compliant products in India will be prohibited.
Note: This order excludes any product already covered under existing BIS QCOs.
This move underscores the government’s push for enhanced safety, performance, and reliability in high-voltage power systems—especially important for sectors like renewable energy, industrial automation, and smart infrastructure.
