Today in our 30-day journey through BIS Scheme X – Omnibus Technical Regulation (OTR), we spotlight a crucial mechanical category: gears, gearing systems, and related transmission devices, which will soon require mandatory BIS certification.

Scope of Regulation:

This regulation applies to all types of:

  • Gears and gearing
  • Toothed wheels
  • Chain sprockets
  • Transmission elements such as ball or roller screws
  • Gearboxes and speed changers, including torque converters
…along with their assemblies, sub-assemblies, and components.

Applicable HSN Codes:

  • 84834000
  • 84839000

Compliance Deadline:

1st September 2026 – After this date, manufacturing, importing, or selling these products in India will require mandatory BIS certification.

Important Note:

This order does not apply to machinery or electrical equipment already regulated under other BIS Quality Control Orders (QCOs).

The inclusion of gears and transmission devices under the OTR mandate reinforces the government’s focus on quality, safety, and reliability in critical mechanical components.

Businesses in this sector should start the certification process early to ensure uninterrupted operations and market access.
