Why BEE Certification is Important?

Why BEE Certification is Important in India?

BEE certification is an essential certification in India issued by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency to electric or electronic appliance companies.

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is an agency set up by the Government of India, under the Ministry of Power on 1st March 2002 under the provisions of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001.

It was established with the primary goal of promoting energy efficiency and conservation in different industries and sectors to reduce energy consumption and environmental impact.

Now you would be thinking of what BEE certification is, what products come under it, why it is important, and how it can enhance your business.

So, here in this blog, we are going to cover every aspect of BEE Certification and will provide you with a complete guide.

So, What is BEE Certification?

What is BEE certification?

BEE Certification, which stands for Bureau of Energy Efficiency Certification, is a program in India that promotes energy efficiency in various products and industries.

Certification involves meeting government standards for energy efficiency and then certifying products that meet those standards.

For example, BEE has implemented the star rating system for electrical appliances such as air conditioners, refrigerators, and other household and industrial equipment.

The star rating indicates the level of energy efficiency, with a higher number of stars representing higher energy efficiency.

However, let’s understand what the BEE Standard and Labelling Scheme are.

BEE Standards and Labeling (S&L) Program

BEE Standard and Labelling Scheme

The BEE Standards and Labeling (S&L) program is one of the most well-known initiatives of the BEE Certification program.

It was launched by the Hon’ble Minister of Power in May 2006 and is currently invoked for 28 appliances/equipment.

In addition to displaying energy performance labels on high-energy appliances and equipment, the program also establishes minimum energy performance standards.

Furthermore, the significant aspect of this Program is the establishment of minimum energy performance standards (MEPS) for appliances and equipment.

As part of the MEPS Programme, appliances and equipment are evaluated for energy efficiency on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 stars being the most energy-efficient.

This scheme intends to help consumers make informed choices when purchasing products, as they can easily compare the energy consumption of different models.

This scheme also provides consumers with information about the potential cost-savings of marketed household and other equipment.

Now, let’s see the list of products that come under the BEE Star Labeling Programme.

BEE is constantly expanding the list of products which already include a wide range of different products.

Who can Apply for BEE Certification in India?

Importers, traders, or manufacturers can apply for the license under the Star Labelling Scheme of the BEE. Below is a description of the scope of each applicant:

Importer: According to the Star labelling scheme of BEE, if an Indian company or entity wants to import any product under the mandatory scheme of BEE Certification, it has to go through the BEE registration procedure.

The importer may only register one product with one brand under one login.

Trader: As per the State Labelling Scheme for BEE, any domestic trader trading domestically with products that are under the BEE certification regime must undergo the BEE registration process.

Also, it is important to note that, one importer can only register one product for one brand, under one login.

Manufacturer: The manufacturer of the final product can register their product under the Star labelling scheme of BEE. However, only one product with one brand can be registered under one login.

Why BEE Certification is Important?
