The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers made the ISI Mark mandatory for various woven sacks on December 6, 2023.
This Quality Control Order (QCO) was a significant move aimed at ensuring the safety and quality of these products.
But first, let’s understand what woven sacks are.
Woven sacks are commonly used for packaging various materials such as grains, cement, fertilizers, chemicals, etc.
They are made by weaving polypropylene (PP) or polyethene (PE) strips together to form a strong, durable bag.
Now let’s see which sacks are covered by this Quality Control Order and why it was made mandatory for them to carry an ISI mark.
Quality Control Order for Various Woven Sacks
The order applies to a wide range of woven sacks used in different industries. Let’s check which woven sacks need to carry mandatory ISI marks.

So, Why has the ISI Mark been Made Mandatory for These Sacks?
The ISI mark stands for Indian Standards Institute, which signifies that the product meets the quality standards set by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS).
However, making the ISI mark mandatory ensures that the woven sacks comply with specific quality parameters and safety standards.
Here’s why this move is important:
Quality Assurance: The ISI mark assures consumers that the woven sacks they are purchasing meet certain quality benchmarks.
This includes factors such as strength, durability, and resistance to tearing or puncturing, ensuring that the sacks can safely contain and transport the materials they are intended for.
Safety: Ensuring the quality of woven sacks is also crucial for safety, especially when they are used for packaging materials like chemicals or fertilisers.
Consumer Confidence: When consumers see the ISI mark on woven sacks, they can have confidence that the product has undergone rigorous testing and meets recognized quality standards.
Industry Compliance: Mandating the ISI mark encourages manufacturers to adhere to quality standards set by regulatory bodies.
This also helps in promoting quality products in the industry and discourages the production and sale of inferior products.
