You have probably noticed the ISI mark on many products but have you ever wondered what it means and why it’s so important?
Recently in a significant move to ensure the safety and quality of laboratory glassware products, the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) announced a Quality Control Order (QCO) on 1 January 2024.
This order mandates that specific laboratory glassware items must carry an ISI mark, signifying compliance with established quality standards.
Let’s delve into why this order was introduced and what it means for consumers and businesses.
Quality Control Order for Laboratory Glassware
According to the Laboratory Glassware Quality Control, the following goods and articles are required to conform to the Indian Standard and bear the ISI Mark under license from the Bureau of Indian Standards as per Scheme-1 of Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
Indian Standard |
Title of Indian Standard |
878:2008 |
Laboratory glassware – Graduated measuring cylinders |
915:2012 |
Laboratory glassware – One – Mark volumetric flasks |
1381 (Part 1): 2003 |
Laboratory glassware –Narrow-necked boiling flasks |
1117:2018 |
Laboratory glassware – Single volume pipettes |
2619:2018 |
Glass beakers |
However, this rule is exempt for any goods or articles manufactured domestically for the intent of export.
Business owners will have six months to comply with the order when it goes into effect on July 6, 2024.
Recognizing the diverse nature of businesses and their varying capacities to adapt to regulatory changes, the DPIIT has provided a different implementation schedule for Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs):
Small Enterprises: These enterprises have until 1 October 2024 to ensure that their laboratory glassware products carry the ISI mark.
This extended timeline allows small-scale businesses to make necessary adjustments to comply with the quality control requirements without undue strain on their operations.
Micro Enterprises: Given their relatively smaller scale and limited resources, Micro Enterprises have been granted additional time, with a deadline of 1 January 2025 for compliance.
This flexibility acknowledges the challenges faced by micro-businesses in meeting regulatory standards while striving for sustainability and growth.

Why ISI Mark is Important?
The ISI mark, issued by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), serves as a hallmark of quality and conformity to specified standards.
For laboratory glassware products the ISI mark ensures that they meet stringent quality requirements. Here’s why it’s crucial:
1. Consumer Safety: Laboratory glassware is extensively used in various scientific experiments, research, and educational activities.
Any compromise in quality could lead to inaccurate measurements, chemical reactions, or even accidents, jeopardizing the safety of individuals using these products.
The ISI mark assures consumers that the glassware they are using adheres to established safety standards, minimizing potential risks.
2. Reliability and Accuracy: Precise measurements are fundamental in scientific endeavours.
Whether it’s measuring volumes, conducting titrations, or carrying out experiments, the accuracy of laboratory glassware is paramount.
Products bearing the ISI mark undergo rigorous testing to ensure their accuracy and reliability, instilling confidence in researchers, educators, and professionals relying on these instruments for their work.
3. Quality Assurance: The ISI mark signifies compliance with predefined quality parameters set by regulatory authorities.
This includes factors such as material composition, dimensional accuracy, resistance to temperature variations, and chemical stability.
By enforcing the ISI mark requirement, the government aims to raise the overall quality standards within the industry, fostering trust and competitiveness in the market.
