Scope   This standard specifies minimum requirements for the material, design, construction and workmanship, manufacturing processes and tests at the manufacture of refillable quenched and tempered seamless steel gas cylinders of water capacities from 0.5 litre up to and including 400 litres for compressed, liquefied and dissolved gases exposed to extreme ambient 

temperatures (normally between-20 and +65℃). This part applies to cylinders with a maximum tensile strength (Rm) less than 1 100 MPa (112 kgf/mm2).

End-use application  Refillable seamless steel gas cylinders are designed for safe storage and transportation of gases. These cylinders are made from quenched and tempered steel with a tensile strength below 1100 MPa, ensuring durability and reliability under high-pressure applications.

The Ministry of Commerce & Industry, specifically the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Government of India, regularly issues Quality Control Orders (QCOs) under the aspect of Environment, Health & Safety (EHS) to regulate various types of goods imported into or manufactured locally within the country. In line with this objective, a recent QCO has been issued to regulate “Refillable Seamless steel gas cylinders Part 2 Quenched and tempered steel cylinders with tensile strength less than 1100 MPa (112 kgf/mm2)”. This product falls under the mandatory BIS-ISI Mark certification scheme (Scheme-I of Schedule II), requiring manufacturers and importers to obtain a valid license by a specified deadline. Failure to comply will prohibit importing, manufacturing or selling these goods in the Indian market.
