The government recently introduced a significant regulation making the ISI mark mandatory for hair and skin appliances. But do you know why?
Imagine you’re using your favourite hair dryer or curling iron to get ready for the day. You want these appliances to work well and be safe to use, right?
Well, the government wants the same thing! That’s why they’ve mandated ISI marks for electrical appliances that we use for our skin and hair.
This mark tells us that the product meets certain quality standards set by the government. It’s like a stamp of approval that says, “This product is safe and reliable!”
Let’s take a closer look at what this rule means and why it’s important. But before that let’s understand what are skin and hair appliances.
What are Skin and Hair Appliances?
Skin and hair appliances are electrical devices that we use to take care of our skin and hair.
They’re the gadgets we rely on to keep ourselves looking good and feeling confident every day.
Think of things like hair dryers, straighteners, curling irons, and trimmers for your hair, as well as devices like facial steamers and massagers for your skin.
These appliances help us style our hair, remove unwanted hair, and take care of our skin in various ways, making our grooming routines easier and more effective.
So, whenever you’re using a gadget to fix your hair or pamper your skin, you’re likely using a skin or hair appliance!
Before moving further, let’s understand the significance of the ISI Mark.
Significance of ISI Mark
The ISI Mark is a certification provided by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), indicating that a product conforms to specific quality standards set by the Indian government.
For consumers, the ISI Mark serves as a mark of assurance regarding the safety, reliability, and quality of the product they are purchasing.
It gives us peace of mind knowing that what we’re buying has been checked and approved, so we can use it without worrying about any hidden surprises or risks.
In simple terms, the ISI mark helps us make smart choices and ensures that the things we bring into our homes are top-notch.
Understanding Quality Control Orders on Skin and Hair Appliances
The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) announced a new rule to ensure the quality of Electrical Appliances used for Skin or Haircare.
According to this rule, skin and hair appliances must now carry an ISI Mark.
This rule will officially take effect 12 months after it is published in the Official Gazette, which means it will be enforced from March 5, 2025.
In simple words, manufacturers have 12 months to comply with this regulation, and as of 5 March 2025, no skin or hair appliance will be sold without an ISI mark.
To give smaller businesses time to adapt, Micro and Small Enterprises (MSEs) have different deadlines:
The deadline for small businesses is 15 months, which means that they have until June 2025, and the deadline for micro businesses is 18 months, which means they have until September 2025 to comply.
The Bureau of Indian Standards shall certify and enforce the standards for the products listed below.

Why Quality Control Order Issued for Skin and Hair Appliances?
The issuance of a quality control order for skin and hair appliances highlights the government’s commitment to consumer safety and product quality.
These appliances directly come in contact with the skin and hair, making it crucial to ensure that they meet stringent quality standards.
By implementing this order, the government aims to reduce potential risks associated with substandard products, such as electrical hazards, burns, or other injuries caused by malfunctioning appliances.
